Personal Responsibility

I remember the day as if it were yesterday. It was 8 years ago, my business was in ruin, I had no personal life, my left hip had just been replaced, I was deeply in debt, living in a small 1-bedroom apartment, and I had six dollars in my pocket. Sitting at my small kitchen table feeling lost with my future bleak and hopeless, I suddenly realized that if this was ever going to change it was completely up to me. No one else was going to do it for me…no one was going to come to my rescue. That stark realization opened my eyes. I have not been the same since. I began the practice of self-responsibility. I AM RESPONSIBLE!

In order to feel in control and in charge of your life, you must be willing to take responsibility for your actions, thoughts, choices, desires and the attainment of your goals. In short, it means that you take full responsibility for your life and your well being. So much is written and talked about concerning self-esteem. Well, to my way of thinking there cannot be high self-esteem without the practice of self-responsibility. No one owes you the fulfillment of your dreams. If you have dreams, it is up to you to discover how to satisfy them. You must take responsibility for developing and implementing an action plan.

To often we wait for “them” to do it for us, and when “they” fail or fulfill our dreams or make us happy, then we try to explain away our lives of extended mediocrity by blaming others or making excuses to cover up our irresponsibility, Don’t fall into that trap, decide today, at this moment, that “if it’s to be, it’s up to me.” Let the words “I AM RESPONSIBLE” push you unto the fast track to success.

In stressing that we need to take responsibility for our lives, I am not suggesting that people never have accidents, or that a person is responsible for everything that may happen. Some things we have control over; others we do not. We need to know the difference between that which is up to us and that, which is not.

Remember, self-responsibility means taking an active role in your life rather than just sitting back and waiting for something to happen.
